MYSTIC, Conn. - In the first game of their three-game road trip, the Vermont Mountaineers battled the Mystic Schooners in a pitchers duel, but fell 1-0 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
Mystic broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the seventh, taking the 1-0 lead. Vermont relief pitcher Rayne Supple (Shelburne, Vt./Wake Forest) walked John Trousdale (Rogersville, Ala./Alabama), who later came around to score the run on a wild pitch by Supple.
Mountaineers lefty Grady Miller (Wenatchee, Wash./U of Portland) made his second consecutive solid start of the season. He went six full innings, struck out six, allowed three hits, and walked two. In his two starts this year, Miller has not allowed a run over 13 total innings.
The Schooners started right hander Justin Cashman (Rowley, Mass./Hartford), who pitched five and one third scoreless innings, keeping his season ERA at zero. Cashman struck out six, walking two, and allowing only three hits.
Through five innings, Miller and Cashman combined for 10 strikeouts and only 6 hits.
The Schooners had Jared Gallagher (Southington, Conn./CCSU), Mike Appel (Orange, Conn./CCSU), Logan Lessard (Cromwell, Conn./Bryant), and Turner French (Wallingford, Conn./St. Johns) come in for three and two thirds innings of relief, combining to allow only one hit, while striking out one. French came in for the ninth, recording the save.
One of the Mountaineers' only chances in the game came in the eighth when Sam Flamini (Yorkville, Ill./Xavier) reached on an error and Chase Grant (Carlsbad, Ca./U of Nevada Reno) singled. With two outs, shortstop Michael Hartnagel (Brownsburg, Ind./Butler) flew out to center field, which ended the threat.
Mike Appel, who didn't allow a hit over two thirds of an inning of work, picked up the win for Mystic.
Supple suffered the loss, pitching two innings, giving up the run on the wild pitch, allowing one hit, striking out two, and walking four.
The Mountaineers (3-3) drop their third straight game and will continue their road trip on Thursday in Danbury, Conn. when they'll take on the Westerners at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
