Myrtle Beach Pelicans: Game Notes, August 6 at Winston-Salem

August 6, 2018 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans begin a three-game series at the Winston-Salem Dash with Monday's 7 p.m. contest from BB&T Ballpark. RHP Alex Lange (6-7, 3.98 ERA) starts for the Birds against Winston-Salem RHP Luis Martinez (6-6, 4.62 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, TuneIn and the MiLB First Pitch app.

P-NATS EXECUTE SWEEP OF MYRTLE BEACH The Potomac Nationals broomed the Pelicans in their three-game series with Sunday's 7-0 victory over Myrtle Beach from Pfitzner Stadium. The P-Nats jumped on the board in the first inning for an early advantage. Aldrem Corredor notched an RBI single before Luis Garcia scored on a wild pitch. Corredor doubled home a run in the third and his two-run two-bagger in the fourth set the margin to 5-0. Telmito Agustin hit an RBI single and Bryan Mejia added an RBI double in the fifth inning to increase Potomac's advantage to 7-0. The Pelicans mustered eight hits offensively, but the club stranded 10 runners with an 0-for-6 effort with runners in scoring position. Zach Davis reached base three times in the losing effort.

NO RESOURCES Myrtle Beach compiled just one run on 12 hits in 23 innings during their series at Potomac, suffering a pair of shutout defeats. The Pelicans have been blanked a club-record 18 times this season, with Lynchburg (11), Down East (10) and Frederick (10) the only other Carolina League squads in double-digits. The Birds' 18 blankings are the most in MiLB and equal that of the 2017 Winston-Salem Dash for the most in the circuit since Wilmington was shut out 20 times in 2015.

A LOT TO SETTLE Over the Myrtle Beach's last 13 contests, 11 have been decided by three runs or less, including a remarkable nine by just one tally. On the season, Myrtle Beach has played the third-highest number of games in the Carolina League decided by no more than three runs. The Pelicans are an even 35-35 in those engagements.

LIKE SEEING AN OLD FRIEND In 16 games from June 30 through July 13, Myrtle Beach infielder Andruw Monasterio went just 7-for-56 (.125) at the plate. The Caracas, Venezuela native has reached base in 15 of his 16 contests since, batting 20-for-50 with two doubles, one home run and five RBIs to slash a sizzling .400/.492/.500 during this run. After posting a walk rate of 5.2 percent between Short Season Class A Eugene and Low-A South Bend in 2016 and 8.3 percent with South Bend and Myrtle Beach last year, Monasterio is walking in 12.0 percent of his plate appearances this season.

YOU WIN, TAKE A PICTURE The Chicago Cubs announced Sunday that Myrtle Beach infielder Jared Young earned the organization's Minor League Player of the Month and right-hander Erick Leal took the club's Minor League Pitcher of the Month award. Between Low-A South Bend and the Pelicans, Young batted .350/.414/.510 (.924 OPS) with four doubles, four home runs and 17 RBIs in July. He reached base in all 27 games he played in during the month. Leal did not surrender an earned run over 22.2 innings in July. Through seven appearances, two of them starts, the Valencia, Venezuela native went 1-0, only allowing two unearned runs on eight hits while striking out 25 against one walk.

THE ROAD HAS BEEN LONG After a six-game winning streak from July 10-16, Myrtle Beach has struggled, losing 14 of their last 18 contests. Over that span, the Pelicans have been outscored 79-44, yielding at least four runs in 12 of those 18 games. The Birds find themselves 13 games under .500 for the first time since 2010, and the club is one defeat away from matching a season-worst six-game losing streak. Myrtle Beach also enters their series with Winston-Salem having been swept for the seventh time this season, the most for the Pelicans since 2005.

BIBS ON In the first four games with Myrtle Beach, Jared Young went just 2-for-15 (.133) with an RBI and three walks. However, the Prince George, British Columbia native seems to be starting to figure out the High-A level. Over the last 22 games, he is batting 24-for-79 with two doubles, four home runs, 13 RBIs and five walks to slash .304/.368/.481. With an 0-for-4 Sunday, Young saw his 34-game on-base streak, dating back to his time with Low-A South Bend, come to an end.

PELICAN POINTS Coming into tonight's matchup, Alex Lange has limited attempted basestealers to a 9-for-18 success rate in 2018. That figure ranks ninth in the Carolina League. The right is also third in FIP (3.35) and fifth in WHIP (1.21)... It is worth noting that the Birds' 10-game deficit of the Astros entering tonight is the club's largest for a playoff spot in 2018.
