BRUCE SILENCES DASTERLY DASH

Due to a five-hit, complete-game shutout from Steven Bruce, Winston-Salem was unable to register a sweep against the Down East Wood Ducks, falling 5-0 in Sunday's series finale at Grainger Stadium. Bruce, who was making his fourth appearance against the Dash this year, allowed just one runner to reach third base. The right-hander tossed 98 pitches, logging 72 strikes in the Wood Ducks first complete-game shutout in franchise history (2017-present). Meanwhile, the Wood Ducks plated four in the third inning and one in the fourth against John Parke, who struck out a career-high 10 in the loss.

SETTLING IN VERY NICELY

In the Dash's loss on Sunday, Nick Madrigal, who was picked by the White Sox out of Oregon State University with the fourth overall selection in the 2018 Draft, went 2-for-4 with two singles. The highest-drafted player in OSU history is now 5-for-12 at the High-A level with a .500 on-base percentage. Madrigal began his professional career with 72 plate appearances without a strikeout before being punched out swinging by Rollie Lacy in the second inning on Saturday.

HOARDING ALL THE SHEEP

With the addition of Madrigal, Winston-Salem currently boasts eight of the top prospects in the White Sox system per MLB Pipeline on its active roster, including infielders Madrigal (No. 4), Gavin Sheets (No. 15) and Rivera (No. 28), outfielders Blake Rutherford (No. 7) and Luis Gonzalez (No. 14) and right-handers Alec Hansen (No. 10), Tyler Johnson (No. 23) and Lincoln Henzman (No. 30).

LIGHTING THE GAS

Despite his hard-throwing nature, Winston-Salem is looking for a bounce-back effort from Luis Martinez, who wrapped up his month of July with a loss at Salem. The right-hander went five innings and allowed four runs against the Red Sox. After going 2-0 with a 3.67 ERA in five starts in June, the righty went 1-2 with a 5.90 ERA in July.

WORTHY OF A PRESS RELEASE

A former Nationals and Orioles farmhand, Yermin Mercedes is now posting a .993 OPS after the All-Star Break with five home runs and 25 RBIs. Mercedes earned the Carolina League's Player of the Week Award from July 30-August 5. Mercedes posted a .545/.615/1.182 batting line with a double, two homers, four RBIs and six runs scored last week. The 25-year-old was selected by the White Sox in the Minor League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December of 2017. Mercedes has also caught 43.5 percent of base-stealers behind the plate.

WOULD SHARE DRINKS WITH THEM

Following their three-game set against the Down East Wood Ducks, Winston-Salem now kicks off a three-game set against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash have recorded three sweeps against the Pelicans this year, marking the first time in the Dash era (2009-present) that Winston-Salem has swept an opponent three years. Two of those came on the road (April 9-11 & July 21-23), while one occurred from June 11-13 at BB&T Ballpark.

TASTY ENOUGH FOR BIBS

After winning two out of three against the Wood Ducks, Winston-Salem still ranks first in the Carolina League in runs (574), hits (1,025), doubles (217), triples (35), slugging percentage (.417) and RBIs (540). Meanwhile, the ballclub ranks second in the league in batting average (.273) and on-base percentage (.343). The Dash are also tied for third in the circuit with 84 homers. On the mound, Winston-Salem ranks third in the circuit in ERA (3.62) and fourth in the league with 902 strikeouts. On defense, the Dash are fourth in fielding percentage (.975).
