Musketeers' Weekend Ends with a Thud

March 3, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Sioux City Musketeers News Release

SIOUX CITY,IA - The Musketeers returned to action Sunday afternoon against the Sioux Falls Stampede to cap off a three-game weekend, and it was not the finish the Musketeers were hoping for losing by a final score of 5-2.

The Herd wasted no time getting on the board in this one with Jared Wescot scoring just 3:07 into the game to give the Stampede a 1-0 lead. Austen Swankler extended Sioux Falls' lead to 2-0 six minutes later on the powerplay. The Stampede would score again at the 15:16 mark to go up 3-0 in front of a stunned crowd of people and dogs at the Tyson Events Center. Jake Sibell would be pulled after the goal to try and spur the Musketeers offense.

Ian Malcolmson gave the Musketeers some life with a big goal just 1:30 into the 2nd period. Josh Boyer, who so far has been an excellent fit in Sioux City, found Malcolmson with a pass and he fired it high over the shoulder of Jaxson Stauber to bring the Musketeers back with two.

Sioux Falls would recapture their three-goal advantage just under halfway into the period when Jami Krannila found the back of the net on the powerplay. The Musketeer play steadily improved as the period progressed and eventually Matt Miller, who was one of Sioux City's best players this afternoon, fired a rebound past Stauber to once again bring the Musketeer back within two.

Unfortunately, that would be all the offense the Musketeers could muster. The Herd added another powerplay goal at the 8:46 mark of the 3rd period to seal the 5-2 victory.

The Musketeers were badly outshot in this one with Kraws and Sibell combining for 43 saves on 48 shots while Stauber stopped 15 of 17 for the Stampede.

The Musketeers will now head on the road for a tough two-game series against the Tri-City Storm next weekend. As always you can catch both of those games live at Castle Pub.
