Musketeers Head South to Take on Lincoln & Omaha
January 24, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux City Musketeers News Release
The Musketeers will take on the Lincoln Stars for the 4th time this season, but this time will be on the road in the Ice Box. Sioux City will also take on the Omaha Lancers in their 3rd matchup of the season and first in Omaha.
The Musketeers are 1-2 against the Lincoln Stars this season after facing them back in October and late November. The first matchup between the two resulted in the Musketeers pulling out an overtime victory at a score of 3-2, before the next night being beaten by a score of 4-1. Sioux City also lost the matchup in November with a high scoring game of 6-4. All of these matches were played at the Tyson Events Center as this will be the first time the Musketeers head to Lincoln for a matchup this season. These two teams lead the Western Conference in powerplay percentage as Lincoln is ahead of Sioux City with a 21.5% success rate to Sioux City's 20.9% success rate. The Musketeers penalty kill is better than Lincoln's as the Stars have the worst penalty kill in the league with a 72.4 kill percentage. The Musketeers also have had the second fewest powerplay opportunities this year with 110 in 30 games. Lincoln is on a two-game win streak after taking on the USA National Team Development Program U17's.
The Musketeers have taken on the Lancers twice already this season with a split record of 1-1 after the home opener back in October in an overtime thriller, and New Years Eve when the Lancers were able to sneak away with a victory at 6-4. This also will be the first matchup in Omaha for the team after a 1-1 record at home against the Lancers. The Musketeers are 4-5-4 on the road this year, but 4 of their last 5 games have been on the road where they have split the series at a 3-0-2 record in the last 5 games. The Omaha Lancers are 2-2-1 in their last 5 games.
Sioux City will have to prevent the games this weekend from going to an extra 5 minutes of play or a shootout as a 2-6 record in overtimes played this season and 1-1 in shootouts this year could prove costly. Christian Jimenez has moved into the top 5 defensemen in the league in points with 20. The Musketeers are 8-3-4 when scoring first, meaning get on the board early is the way to go for Sioux City. The Musketeers are also 3-0-1 when leading after two periods in road games, and 0-3-2 after being tied after 1 and are 0-4-3 when trailing after two periods. The Musketeers are 8-7-3-1 against Western Conference opponents this season as they will have two more this weekend. The Musketeers resume shows they give up the most goals in the third period and score most of their goals in the 1st and 3rd period, along with taking most of their shots in the 3rd period.
The Musketeers currently sit in 7th place in the Western Conference with 31 points, just behind the Des Moines Buccaneers in 6th place with their 33 points for the final spot into the Clark Cup Playoffs. 2nd place through 7th place in the standings are separated by only 9 points, meaning there is a lot of shuffling that could happen in the future.
The Musketeers return home to the Tyson Events Center on Friday, January 31st to take on the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 P.M. followed with the 2nd annual Teacher's Dash for Cash on Saturday, February 1st against the Omaha Lancers.
