Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Muskegon Lumberjacks' tough start to the 2019-20 USHL season continued Friday.

The Lumberjacks drew another tough road foe this weekend with a pair of games at rival Youngstown, and they fell to 0-3 with a 4-2 loss to the Phantoms.

Muskegon, which dropped both games of its season-opening trip to Pittsburgh for the Fall Classic last week, will go for its first win of the season at Youngstown Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Covelli Centre.

Luke Mobley and Oliver MacDonald both scored their second goals of the season for the Lumberjacks, who went 0-for-2 on the power play.

That's all the offense Muskegon could muster though, to go along with the one goal in its opener and two goals in its second game.

"I'm real happy with the effort from the guys today," Muskegon coach Mike Hamilton said. "We've got to bear down though and get more shots and find a way to get them into the back of the net."

Youngstown improved to 2-1 with a pair of goals in the first period and one each in the second and third periods.

Reilly Funk scored a pair of goals for the hosts, who went 1-for-4 with the man advantage

Mobley's goal with 58 seconds left in the first period drew the Lumberjacks to within 2-1, but Funk quickly reestablished the two-goal lead for Youngtown on the power play with his second goal of the game at 3:13 of the second period.

The goal prompted Hamilton to make a goaltender change, as he inserted Jack Williams in net for the first time this season. Williams replaced starter Noah Giesbrecht, who made four saves on seven shots.

Williams responded by stopping 14-of-15 shots he faced to keep his team in the game. John Beaton finally beat Williams at 11:26 of the third period for a 4-1 bulge.

"Jack played really well," Hamilton said. "That's one bright spot from today. He practiced strong all week and we liked the progress he's made.

"We're not worried about our goalies. We have two pretty good ones. Noah doesn't have the prettiest of numbers, and I'm sure he'd like a redo today, but he's been solid."

MacDonald closed the scoring with a goal off an offensive zone faceoff with just under five minutes to play.

Tanner Edwards notched his first assist of the season on Mobley's goal.

Dominic Basse made 20 saves to earn the win for the Phantoms.

"We're young, and it seems like every mistake we make is finding its way to the back of our net. We'll keep working at it."
