Musicians training camp in full swing
April 10, 2006 - World Basketball Association (WBA)
Murfreesboro Musicians News Release
Well, the day finally arrived where we opened up Training Camp, and it was great having all the players we had envisioned having sitting in front of us on Friday night in our first official team meeting. It was a special moment in the brief history of our Pro Basketball Franchise. Our GM and President, Dr. Ben Tankard and Dr. Aldrich Perry spoke to the prospective players that will be competing for 12 positions on our Active Player Roster that will tip-off our WBA season later this month. I as well addressed the players and it felt great to be speaking to them directly. I've always felt that the first team meeting sets the tone for the remainder of the season, and if that is true, then this will be a special and magical season indeed for our 2006 Inaugural Murfreesboro Musicians Professional Basketball Team!
We opened Training Camp with our first practice on Saturday morning at Lavergne High School (our official practice site for the Musicians) at 10am. We had four outstanding practices over the weekend (2 each day on Saturday and Sunday). We truly have some very talented players in Training Camp and the competition is very hot and competitive indeed!
Our Coaching Staff is doing a tremendous job, and are so helpful to me. The staff is made up of veteran pro hoops coach, Gerald Oliver, Mike Holloway, Keith Dean, and Jason Osborn. Every successful Head Coach is Blessed with great coaching staffs and help staffs that assist him/her in many diverse ways. I'm Blessed with that here with our Musicians. Also, we have two outstanding trainers in Ms. Patricia Cox and Mr. Andrew Wallace, who take care of our players and help keep them physically at their best, so they can play on the court.
We have truly put together a very talented group of prospective players that are competing against each other for 12 spots on our Active Roster to tip-off the 2006 WBA Season. We'll carry 12 on our Active Player Roster and will also have a 3 to 4 player Practice/Developmental Squad. So we do have everything in order to have an excellent squad and team throughout the entire WBA season.
Thus far all the players have done an outstanding job! A few players though have stood out to this point with former MTSU standout, Tommy Gunn leading the way. We have moved Tommy to the point guard position, for I believe that is Tommy's best chance to make it to the highest level of professional basketball, the NBA! On the frontline we've assembled some big and athletic players led by 7'1-280-Center, Julius Lampkey from Oklahoma City, OK. The former OU Sooner was placed with the Musicians by the NBA to develop. As well, Dexter Hall (6'10-225-Center/Forward-South Carolina State) and Chris Furguson (6'7-245-Power Forward-North Carolina A&T) have made strong impressions in camp!
We will continue Training Camp this week with practices each evening at Lavergne High School from 6pm to 8pm on Monday through Thursday.
All fans are invited to come out and watch the Musicians practice. We will tip-off our season on April 13th at Lavergne High School as we host a Nashville challenge team in a scrimmage game and on April 18 against the North Mississippi Tornadoes. Tip-off time will be at 7pm. Both exhibition games are free as well as an april 15 Fan Jam at Patterson park begining at 4pm. The Official Musicians season opener is April 22nd at Oakland H.S. Gym against the Cleveland Magic. Call 615-4BALL (4225) for ticket information.
