Vermont Mountaineers News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Vermont pitcher Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Le Moyne College) has been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday morning.
Murphy earned the distinction after being named to the NECBL All-Star game yesterday as a relief pitcher. Murphy impressed in his sixth start of the season on July 16, pitching six innings in a 10-2 victory over the Northern Division-leading Keene Swamp Bats to keep the Mountaineers in the playoff hunt. He went scoreless in those six frames, striking out seven Swamp Bats while walking one and allowing just four hits to acquire his fourth win of the summer.
The right-handed pitcher lowered his WHIP to 1.20, while his ERA now stands at 1.54, the second-lowest in the NECBL. Murphy is up to 37 strikeouts in 35 innings, and batters are hitting just .233 against him.
The rising junior has enjoyed a solid career thus far at Le Moyne College, where he maintains a 3.34 career ERA in 26 games and has struck out 179 batters in over 180 innings.
Murphy is the first Mountaineer to receive Pitcher of the Week honors in nearly four years, after Sean Leland took home the distinction on July 27, 2015.
In addition to Murphy, Nicholas DeGennaro (Toms River, N.J. / Stony Brook University) was named to the Honor Roll for NECBL pitchers for the second-straight week. The sophomore pitched a little over six innings across three games this past week, serving as relief in three wins for Vermont. DeGennaro allowed just one hit and run in those six frames, striking out nine in the process. The lone run is the first run given up by DeGennaro all season, having previously pitched 20 innings of scoreless relief.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Tuesday, July 23, with a 6:30 p.m. showdown at historic Montpelier Recreation Field against the North Adams SteepleCats.
