
Mudcats Get Past Barons in Series Finale

Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (19-31) beat the Birmingham Barons (31-19) 4-3 Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Five County Stadium.
Jake Kahaulelio provided a spark for the Carolina offense out of the leadoff spot, scoring three runs while going 2-3 with two doubles. Todd Frazier doubled in a run in the first inning, and Sean Henry drove in the next Mudcat run with an RBI single in the third inning. Shaun Cumberland and Zach Cozart each delivered RBI singles in the seventh, giving the Mudcats a 4-2 lead.
Alexander Smit (W, 3-2) gave the Mudcats a quality start coming off the DL, yielding only two earned runs over seven innings. Greg Atencio (H, 1) tossed a scoreless eighth inning before Philippe Valiquette (S, 1) earned his first save of the season pitching the ninth inning.
The Mudcats will head to Jacksonville for a five-game set with the Suns. Carolina will send Luis Montano (0-3, 8.10) to the mound for the opener against major leaguer Annibal Sanchez (1-0, 1.29) for Jacksonville, who is currently in a rehab stint in the Southern League.
