Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - After falling victim to a considerable comeback from the Lookouts on Sunday afternoon, the Mudcats reciprocated on Monday night by overcoming an early 5-0 deficit to ultimately come away as victors in a 9-7 finish at AT&T Field.
Chattanooga came swinging right out of the gate. Dee Gordon singled to lead off and quickly swiped second base. Trayvon Robinson followed with a walk to put two runners on base. Yesterday's hero, Corey Smith, then doubled to bring home the two speedsters. The hits continued with doubles from Eddy Perez and Mike Rivera. Once the dust settled, the Lookouts found themselves with a 4-0 lead.
Robinson showed off his powerful stroke in the second by blasting a solo shot to give the Lookouts another run. Carolina entered the scoreboard in the third on an RBI single from Denis Phipps. The Mudcats hit the comeback trail in the sixth by scoring two runs on a Dave Sappelt triple to right field. Chattanooga tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth on a run-resulting force out from Robinson, but the Mudcats countered with two more run in the seventh on solo shots from Mike Costanzo and Eric Eymann.
Down by just one run, the pesky Mudcats continued their gradual eroding of the Lookouts' lead in the eighth. Kris Negron and Seppelt hit back-to-back doubles to even up the score, while a Jake Kahaulelio homer sealed the comeback and gave Carolina an 8-6 lead.
Carolina added an insurance run in the ninth on a Sappelt RBI double. Robinson hit his second homer of the game to lead off the ninth to put the score at 9-7. Singles by Smith and Dustin Yount put runners on the corners with two outs, but Scott Van Slyke popped out in foul territory to anticlimactically end the comeback threat.
Jerry Gil (3-1) picked up the win for the Mudcats by throwing three inning of one-run ball, while Jordan Smith picked up his seventh save of the season by pitching the final two frames.
Relief pitcher Tim Sexton (2-3), who gave up four runs in 1.2 innings, took the loss for the Lookouts. The Chattanooga Lookouts will hit the road to play a five-game homestand against the Jacksonville Suns on Wednesday. The Lookouts will be back in town on Monday, May 31st to begin a 10-game homestand against the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx and Carolina Mudcats. Tickets for these games or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
