Braves Take Series, Down Huntsville 5-2

Pearl, MS - In the final game of a final game series, the Mississippi Braves used a three run home run from Mauro Gomez in the 5th and a two run 6th to beat the Huntsville Stars, 5-2. The win gives Mississippi the series (3-2) and also a .500 mark for the ten game home stand at (5-5).

The Stars collected six base hits for the entire game, two of which came from the first two batters in the game. Lorenzo Cain tripled to lead off the game and Lee Haydel singled in Cain to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. The Stars grabbed another run off of Erik Cordier in the top of the 5th when Martin Maldonado scored on a Brett Lawrie single, making the score 2-0. Cordier picked up the third out with the bases loaded to get out of the 5th.

Mississippi finally busted through in the bottom of the 5th inning. Alex Romero led off the inning with a single and Willie Cabrera singled right behind him to put runners at first and second. Eric Duncan then hit into a fielders choice which put runners at first and third with one out. Mauro Gomez then came to the plate and blasted a Alex Periard pitch over the center field wall to for a three run home run. It was Mauro's sixth homer of the season and it gave the MBraves a 3-2 lead.

An inning later, Mississippi distanced themselves from Huntsville with two more runs. A double by Randy Gress with one out got the inning going, which was followed by Cody Johnson getting hit by a pitch. With runners at first and second, Alex Romero busted a double to drive in one run. Two batters later, Eric Duncan singled in Romero to make the score 5-2, Mississippi. It was Duncan's third hit of the night, giving him two singles and a triple for the game.

Brandon Beachy and Brett Butts took care of the Stars the rest of the way, with Beachy striking out five Stars in two innings, and Butts getting the save in the 9th. Final score, Mississippi 5, Huntsville 2.

Mississippi has an off day tomorrow and starts a series in Mobile Wednesday that will last through Sunday. The MBraves took four of five from Mobile at Trustmark Park earlier this month and will pitch LHP Richard Sullivan (1-3; 6.25) in game one. Mobile will use RHP Barry Enright (2-1; 2.96). First pitch is set for 7:05 at Hank Aaron Stadium Wednesday night.
