Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - Simon Mangos finished with four points and Joe Blaznek had three as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs routed the Mississippi RiverKings 6-1 Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The win extended the Mudbugs' lead to three points over the RiverKings in the Northern Conference standings with two games in hand. The 'Bugs are now 6-2 against Mississippi this year and 24-16-4 overall.
Mangos, Blaznek and David Rutherford each had two-goal outings for the Mudbugs, with Mangos adding two assists and Blaznek contributing one. John DeCaro stopped 25 of 26 shots in his 15th win of the year.
The Mudbugs killed off three Mississippi powerplays in a first period that saw a limited number of scoring chances for either team. The 'Bugs did take a 1-0 lead into the locker room when Simon Mangos was allowed to skate freely out of the corner and into the slot before scoring his eighth goal of the year with only 1:01 left in the period.
David Rutherford gave the Mudbugs a 2-0 lead at 5:21 of the second period, burying a Mangos pass after a furious scramble in front of the Mississippi net. The RiverKings cut the lead in half when Kevin Truelson scored during a 5-on-3 powerplay to make it 2-1.
The 'Bugs re-took the two-goal advantage on a nice hustle play by Joe Ori, who raced down the puck in the Mississippi end before dropping it off to Joe Blaznek. Blaznek then beat Sibbald with a quick shot from the boards to extend the lead to 4-1 after two periods. Tim Boron played the rest of the game in goal for the RiverKings.
Blaznek scored again in during a third period powerplay to extend the lead to 5-1 on a long slapshot. Rutherford then capped it off with his second of the night after a nice feed from Tyrel Lucas to complete the 6-1 victory.
Mark Sibbald took the loss after stopping 12 of 16 shots, while Boron saved 10 of 12. The Mudbugs outshot the RiverKings 28-26 and finished 2 for 4 on the powerplay while holding Mississippi to one goal on nine chances.
The Mudbugs will continue their three-game road swing Thursday night against the Missouri Mavericks at Independence Events Center. Opening faceoff is set for 7:05 pm with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 on AM 1130 KWKH. The game will also be shown live online on CHL TV.
