Laredo Bucks News Release

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Corpus Christi Ice Rays 4-3 in a shootout Tuesday afternoon in the McDonalds Kid's Day game, in front of 5,209 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks won their third straight game to move back into third place in the Southern Conference with a 22-18-8 mark (52 points).

Darryl Smith scored the game-winning goal in the shootout while Kevin Desfosses stopped 33 of 36 shots he faced as the Bucks snapped a six-game winless streak against the Ice Rays. Laredo improved to 9-3 all-time in Kid's Day games.

Jeff Bes tied the game at 3-3 just 8:08 into the third period when he scored on a slap shot from the high slot. Bes' shot appeared to hit in the back of the net and pop out very quickly but the officials did not call it a goal right away. Referee Justin Green then discussed the call with the goal judge who called it a goal to tie the game. The strike was Bes' 15th of the season.

Corpus Christi jumped out in front of the Bucks 1-0 when they batted in a shot from behind the net 7:50 into the first period. Ryan Garbutt was credited with the tally, which was his 17th of the campaign.

Laredo (12-6-5 at home) would knot the game at 1-1 at the 10:21 mark of the first when Curtis Billsten scored a shorthanded goal from the top of the left circle. The strike was his fifth of the season and his first since January 22nd.

The Bucks would take a 2-1 lead a little over three minutes later when Eric Giosa scored on a backhanded power-play goal at the top of the slot. The tally was Giosa's ninth of the season.

Laredo was outshot in the first period 15-13.

The Ice Rays would score two power-play goals in the first 6:40 of the second period to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Kyle Peto tied the game at 2-2 just 23 seconds into the period when hammered home a slap shot from the point on a five-on-three man advantage.

Chad Woolard put the Ice Rays on top 3-2 at the 6:40 mark of the period when he pulled up and scored a power-play goal from the left circle. The goal was Woolard's CHL-leading 29 of the season.

Laredo was outshot in the second period 10-9 and for the game 39-36.

The Bucks beat the Ice Rays for the first time since December 17th when they won at the American Bank Center 2-0. Laredo beat Corpus at home for the first time since December 8th when they won 4-3 in a shootout.

Kevin Beech suffered the loss in net for the Ice Rays as he stopped 35 shots.
