SOUTHAVEN, MS - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs are 3-0 to start the 2008-09 CHL season after a 6-2 victory over division rival Mississippi on Tuesday at the DeSoto Civic Center. The forward line of Kevin Cooper, Joe Blaznek, and Travis Clayton had another great night and the Bugs scored two more powerplay goals to lead them to a win in their first divisional game of the season.
Bossier-Shreveport got off to a quick start in this one when Joe Blaznek scored his second goal as a Mudbug just 1:01 into the contest. Blaznek gained the blue line and fired a shot over the glove hand of rookie goaltender Tyler Sims, who was making his pro debut. A few minutes later, Blaznek and Clayton were working hard behind the net and managed to get the puck out front to Kevin Cooper. Cooper backhanded his second goal of the season past Sims to give the Bugs a 2-0 lead after one.
In the second frame, Mississippi cut the lead to one when Louis Dumont stole the puck on a Mudbugs powerplay and raced down the ice before beating Carroll to make it 2-1. Exactly one minute later though, the Bugs regained the two goal advantage on that same powerplay as Travis Clayton punched in a loose puck in the slot to make it 3-1 for Bossier-Shreveport. The Mudbugs also killed off 1:40 of two-man advantage time for Mississippi during the second period to hold on to the two goal lead after forty minutes.
Just 19 seconds into the third, Brett Smith's blast from just outside the blueline found its way into the net to make it 4-1. The RiverKings countered with a powerplay goal from Stephen Margeson to cut the lead to 4-2. The Bugs came right back with a powerplay goal to make it 5-2 on a nifty passing play between Blaznek, Smith, and finally Kevin Cooper, who scored his second of the night and third of the season. Tyrel Lucas, who just re-joined the team and made his 2008-09 debut for the Bugs on Tuesday night, capped off the scoring with his first goal of the year with just over three minutes remaining. Rookie forward J.J. Martin earned an assist on the play for his first professional point.
The Mudbugs were once again impressive on the powerplay in the four-goal victory, finishing 2 for 5 with the man advantage, while Mississippi was just 1 for 10. Ken Carroll stopped 23 of 24 shots to earn the win, although Ryan Mior played the third period of the game, stopping nine out of 10 shots he faced. Rookie Tyler Sims made his first pro start and stopped 20 of 26 in defeat.
The Mudbugs will now take Friday night off before hosting the RiverKings again on Saturday night in Bossier City. The Bugs will play their second home game of the season starting at 7:05 pm on Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center. The game is also "Scrubs Night", with discounted tickets for medical professionals available through Friday at the Mudbugs office.
