West Virginia Black Bears News Release

Granville, W. Va. - In a low scoring affair at Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears fell in extra-innings to the Batavia Muckdogs 1-0.

This is the second straight game that West Virginia has played past the ninth inning, winning on a walk-off yesterday against the Williamsport Crosscutters.

Hits were hard to come by in Granville due in large part to Black Bears starting pitcher Nicholas Economos. Known as "Moose" by his teammates, the righty had another excellent outing for the home team, throwing six shutout innings while surrendering only four hits to go with eight strikeouts and three walks.

While Economos was hard at work, West Virginia struggled to put runners on base. The Black Bears combined for only four hits all evening, relying on the pitching staff to stay in the game.

P Miguel Hernandez came through for West Virginia with two strong innings in the seventh and eighth. The tall righty maintained the shutout, allowing only two hits and one walk to bring the game into the ninth.

After P Conner Loeprich shut down the Muckdogs in the top of the inning, the Black Bears couldn't put anything together in the bottom half as the teams got set for another extra-inning affair.

Then in the top of the tenth, Batavia squeaked out the only run of the game. Starting the frame with a runner on second base per Minor League rules, a groundout and a fielder's choice brought a baserunner around to score to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

West Virginia managed to get a runner on third via a stolen base, but a pair of strikeouts and a groundout ended the game to give the Muckdogs the win in game one.

Both teams return to Monongalia County Ballpark tomorrow night for game two of the series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
