NORWICH, CT - The Batavia Muckdogs avoided the sweep at the hands of the Connecticut Tigers, as they took down the Tigers 5-3 on Monday night at Dodd Stadium.
Batavia struck first with a run in the first inning. Juan Castillo smacked a one-out single followed by a Romulo Ruiz double to put runners on second and third. David Medina then hit a sacrifice fly to put Batavia on top.
The Tigers came back with two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Jason King and RBI double by Zach Maggard to take a 2-1 lead.
However, the lead did not last long, as the Muckdogs got the two runs back in the second inning. Danny Steinstra's RBI double tied the game at two, while Joey Bergman's RBI single helped Batavia regain the lead 3-2.
Connecticut tied the game at three in the fifth inning.
Colin Kaline started off with a one-out single and later in the frame Tyler Collins slapped a two-out base hit to score Kaline and tie the game up.
However, Batavia would not be denied on this night. Virgil Hill lined a one-out triple in the sixth inning and would score the go-ahead run on a Steinstra RBI single. The Muckdogs added an insurance run in the seventh on a Jeremy Patton RBI single.
Luis Sanz, who pitched six innings, giving up four runs, three of them earned, on six hits and struck out eight, fell to 4-3. Jose Almarante earned the win for Batavia and improved to 3-2 on the year.
The Tigers will hit the road for a five-game road trip beginning with the opening game of a three-game series with the Auburn Doubledays tomorrow evening. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
