
Mountaineers Wrap up Home Field in First Round

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Valley Blue Sox, 7-4, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Tuesday night. With the win, Vermont clinches home field for at least the first round of the 2015 postseason.
Vermont improves to 24-15, while Valley drops to 18-20.
With the score tied at four entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Vermont scratched across a run to take a 5-4 lead, one they would add to.
Leftfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) kicked the inning off with a two out walk. Rightfielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) followed with a triple to deep right-center to score Parenty and make it 5-4.
Vermont pounded out 15 hits in the game, with catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) leading the way with three base knocks and three runs batted in.
The Mountaineers held the lead and added two insurance runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-4 advantage. Parenty worked a one out walk. Eustace and first baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) connected on back-to-back singles. Dudek's hit scored Parenty from third to make it 6-4. Eustace was thrown out in his attempt to reach third on the play. After third baseman Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) walked, shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) singled to load the bases. Second baseman Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) followed with an RBI infield single to put Vermont up 7-4.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Valley answered back with two runs in the top of the third.
Vermont regained the lead in the fourth, when the team erupted for three runs. Dudek led off with a single. Smith reached on a push bunt single to setup first and second with no outs. Pasteur singled to left and Dudek was waved home, but thrown out at the plate. With runners on first and second and one out, Copeland ripped an RBI single to score his college teammate, Smith, to knot the score at two. Pasteur advanced to third on the play. After Copeland stole second, Stypulkowski whacked a two RBI single to score both runners and give the Mountaineers a 4-2 edge.
Valley tied it at four in the fifth before Vermont scored the final three runs of the game.
Drew Lunde (Sammamish, Wash. / Washington State) earned the win in relief for Vermont to improve to 2-1 on the summer. The southpaw dealt two innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on three hits and one walk. He struck out one.
Valley reliever Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, Mass. / UMass-Dartmouth) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the summer. He pitched one and one-third innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk. He struck out three.
Mountaineers' closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) tossed a scoreless final inning and two-thirds to grab his tenth save of the season. Delaplane gave up just one hit and one walk. He struck out two.
The Mountaineers will have Wednesday off and will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Sanford for a 6:30 p.m. bout with the Mainers. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
