Mountaineers Win Seventh Straight

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Ocean State Waves, 8-1, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Sunday night. Vermont sits in first place in the Northern Division with a 9-4 record. The Mountaineers have won seven consecutive games.

Strong pitching and good hitting were the recipe for success once again as starter Elliot Ashbeck (Bradley) hurled another gem.

Ashbeck allowed just one earned run over six innings. He gave up five hits and didn't walk a single batter. Ashbeck also struck out a season-high seven hitters en route to improving to 3-0 on the summer.

Dalton Goss (Alabama-Huntsville) earned a three-inning save, his first of the year, as he allowed no runs on three hits and one walk.

Robert Plohr (St. Louis) started and took the loss for Ocean State, falling to 0-1 on the summer. Plohr lasted just three innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out one.

The Mountaineers had two big offensive innings, one in the third and the other in the seventh.

Newcomer Colin Lyman (Louisville) led off the third with a bunt single, his first hit as a Mountaineer. Trey West (Le Moyne) followed with a single to set up first and second with no outs. After Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) laid down a sacrifice to advance the runners to second and third, Ian Sagdal (Washington State) walked to load the bases. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) followed with the big hit, a two RBI double, plating Lyman and West. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) came up next and hit an infield single to score Sagdal and open up a 3-0 Mountaineers lead.

After Vermont pushed a run across in the sixth, the Waves cut the deficit back to three with a run in the top of the seventh.

The Mountaineers exploded for four more runs in the seventh. Lyman led off with a triple to right center. West followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Lyman and give Vermont a 5-1 edge. After Ben Hall (Alabama-Huntsville) walked, Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) doubled to right to make it second and third with one out. Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) walked to load the bases before Nick Solak (Louisville) hit a two RBI single in his first at bat of the summer to give Vermont a 7-1 lead. Rob Knightes (St. John's) singled to re-load the bases. Two batters later, Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) walked to bring home the final Mountaineers run of the game and make it 8-1.
