Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers upended the Sanford Mainers, 6-2, in a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) affair on Saturday night at Recreation Field.
With the win, Vermont's fourth in a row, the Mountaineers improve to 12-9 on the summer. Sanford drops to 9-11. Vermont now sits in a three-way tie for first place in the Northern Division with Valley and Laconia.
Vermont pushed across three runs in the first and never looked back. Second baseman Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) led off the game with a clean single up the middle. After centefielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Roulis to second, first baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) grounded out to the right side to advance Roulis to third with two outs. Catcher Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) followed with a bunt single down the first base line that Sanford starting pitcher David Rosenberger (Charlottesville, Va. / Virginia) mishandled slightly. Roulis scored on the play to make it 1-0 Vermont. Smith then stole second. After shortstop Garret Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) reached on an infield single to third, leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) smacked a two out two RBI double to score Smith and Copeland and give Vermont a 3-0 edge.
Vermont left-handed starter Taylor Durand (Oak Ridge, Tenn. / Western Carolina) earned the win to move to 1-0 on the summer. Durand hurled five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks. He struck out five.
Relievers Drew Lunde (Sammamish, Wash. / Washington State) and Adam Seibert (West Chester, Pa. / Hofstra) combined for two and one-third innings of scoreless relief before closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) recorded the final five outs en route to his fifth save of the season.
Sanford starter, Rosenberger, had his return to Vermont spoiled as he took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the summer. The lefthander lasted four and one-third innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out two.
The Mainers scored their only two runs of the game in the fifth inning to cut the Vermont lead to one, at 3-2, but the Mountaineers answered back with two in the bottom of the frame. Smith whacked a two RBI single to score third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) and shortstop Devin Hairston (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville), providing Vermont with a 5-2 advantage.
The Mountaineers scored once more in the ninth, when designated hitter Danny Bermudez (Cummings, Ga. / Western Carolina) ripped an RBI single to score Copeland and make it 6-2.
Vermont returns to action on Sunday night, as the squad hits the road to take on Laconia in a top of the standings Northern Division showdown. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Robbie Mills Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
