Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Vermont Mountaineers picked up their fourth straight win on Thursday, topping the Sanford Mainers 5-4 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Vermont scored three runs in the second inning to propel them to the victory.

Mountaineers starter Rayne Supple (Shelburne, Vt./Wake Forest) pitched four and one-third innings in his second start of the year. The Vermont native picked up his first win of the season, allowing just two runs on four hits. The righty struck out four Mainers batters and walked three.

Sanford started lefty Jackson Gillis (Wilmington, Mass./Vanderbilt). The southpaw pitched four full innings, giving up three runs on two hits. Gillis also struck out four and walked four but suffered the loss.

The Mainers took a quick lead in the first inning. Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass./UMass Lowell) led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a single. Ryan Hogan (Kingston, Pa./St. John's) then hit a sinking liner to right field which was caught by Vermont's Abdel Guadalupe (Davie, Fla./Broward). The Mountaineers outfielder threw a bullet to home plate, but Maiola was able to beat the tag, crashing into the catcher and scoring to put Sanford up 1-0.

Vermont responded in the next half inning. Third baseman Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi) doubled to lead off the top of the frame. Gillis got two quick outs, but proceeded to hit a batter and walk the next two, bringing in Malm to tie the game. The next pitch he threw was a passed ball that allowed Nick Ward (Kennett Sq., Pa./West Chester) to score from third base. Jake Farrell (Westwood, Mass./Northeastern) picked up his first hit on the season and brought home Michael Hartnagel (Brownsburg, Ind./Butler) to increase the lead to 3-1.

Maiola scored again for the Mainers in the bottom of the third. He walked for the second time and advanced to second on a fielder's choice before coming around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Hogan to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Vermont added another run in the sixth. Nick Ward hit an RBI single to right field which brought home Cam Walsh (Duxbury, Mass./Northeastern), making it 4-2.

Sanford came back with one run of their own in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an RBI double by third baseman Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Monmouth).

Vermont returned with an insurance run in the top of the eighth thanks to another RBI single by Ward, bringing in Jeffery Scott (Forest, Ind./Bowling Green) from second, expanding the lead to 5-3.

Maiola's strong game continued with a solo homerun in the bottom of the ninth, but that was all the offense the Mainers could manage in the contest.

Grady Miller (Wenatchee, Wash./Portland) and Thomas Muratore (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Lesley) pitched in relief for the Mountaineers. The duo combined for four and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out six. Miller picked up the win and Muratore got the save.

The Mountaineers (10-11) will try to keep their winning streak alive on Friday against the Keene Swamp Bats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Keene, N.H. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network
