July 1, 2011 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, VT - Jeff Cammans hit a two out game winning single on a one ball, two strike count in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Mystic Schooner 4-3 in ten innings in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Friday night. The victory was Vermont's third in their last four games and snapped a six game Mystic win streak. It was also the second straight time these two teams have played extra inning affairs with Vermont winning both.
The Mountaineers got the scoring started in the fifth inning as Doug Freeman worked a one out walk from Schooners starter Jackson Geary. Geary then walked Jon Hotta and was lifted in favor of Mark Bordonaro. Bordonaro would get Johnny Mishu to pop out harmlessly leaving the Mountaineers with two on two outs. Greg Bachman then hit a hard grounder to short that missed the glove of John Murphy scoring Freeman (Lakeland, FL/King). Derek Jones would then single home both Hotta and Bachman after a wild pitch from Bordonaro. For Jones (Snohomish, WA/Washington State) they were his first RBI of the summer.
Geary ultimately pitched four and one third innings giving up two runs on two hits while walking four and striking out five. It was his second start against Vermont after throwing five no-hit innings in Connecticut on June 16th. Bordonaro pitched a solid two and two thirds giving up just one run to keep the Schooners close.
Vermont starter Cody Ege had another solid outing on the hill getting through six innings giving up just one run on five while striking out four. Ege (Cherokee, IA/Louisville) gave up his only run to Joe Hudson as a pitch-hit leadoff homerun in the sixth. The Mystic catcher has hit three of his five homers this year off Mountaineer pitching. Ege would however be forced to take a no-decision as the bullpen could not hold on to the two run lead.
Jacob Booden would come on to pitch the eighth after Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Canada/LeMoyne) pitched a scoreless seventh. Booden (Vernon Hills, IL/Bradley) would allow the first two runners to reach before striking out Christian Griffiths. A wild pitch would advance the runners to second and third before Nick Ferraresi hit a line drive single to tie the ball game at 3-3. Those two runs were the first given up this summer by Booden who would then retire the next two batters. Mystic reliever Ricky Hodges would set the side down in order in bottom of the frame.
In the ninth, Booden would again allow two runners to reach before Kyle Grana came on in relief to keep the game knotted up. Vermont would go down in order in the bottom of the ninth sending the two teams into extra innings for the second straight meeting. In the top of the tenth, Grana (Louisville, KY/Bellarmine) pitched a perfect frame striking out one.
In the home half of the inning, Mishu (Nashville, TN/Princeton) lead off with a single. He would then advance to second on a steal attempt. Hodges threw over to first on a pick-off attempt and first baseman Nick Merullo's throw sailed into left field allowing Mishu to advance to third with nobody out. Bachman would strike out followed by a Derek Jones groundout to leave Mishu at third with two outs. Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, RI/URI) fell behind in the count with one ball and two strikes before lacing a Hodges fastball into centerfield to send the Mountaineers home victorious.
Kyle Grana (1-1) got the win in relief while Ricky Hodges was saddled with the loss for Mystic who had their six game win streak snapped.
Vermont (8-6) continues their home stand tomorrow Saturday, July 2nd as they face the Holyoke Blue Sox at 6:30 p.m. You can hear all the action live on ESPN 1240, WSKI and online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
