Mountaineers Upend Two-Time Defending League Champs Valley Blue Sox, 8-4

Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Mountaineers toppled the two-time defending league champions on Monday evening, earning an 8-4 victory over the Valley Blue Sox at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.

A three-run homer and subsequent timely scoring propelled Vermont to their ninth-straight win and sole position of first place in the NECBL Northern Division.

Neither team could get much going until the third frame, when the Blue Sox struck first with a drive out to left field that fell just to the left of Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) and allowed Travis Holt to score. Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook University) promptly responded, blasting one past the center field fence with Kevin Brenning (Florence, Al. / University of North Alabama) and Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) both on base, pushing the Mountaineers ahead, 3-1.

Valley immediately tied things up in the fourth, picking up a Joe Lomuscio run after Holt drilled one to right field. Matthew Richardson ensured the third score on a sacrifice fly that brought Collin Mathews home. The Mountaineers were able to capitalize on an error by Holt in the following frame, however, breaking the tie after the second baseman could not scoop up the nearby rolling ball which gave Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Fordham University) time to make a clean sprint and score.

The visitors almost regained the lead in the sixth after getting Lomuscio and Mathews on second and third, but a mad scramble on the next at-bat by Holt got both runners in a rundown that ultimately resulted in them out. Goulard, meanwhile, took advantage of the opportunity in the bottom, sending one to right field as Charping was able to come in for the fifth Mountaineer run.

Vermont's offense erupted for three more runs in the eighth, first with a Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) triple straight to center field with Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) and Charping on base. Goulard finished the job and brought Climo home on a hit to right field. The Blue Sox added one more run in the final frame, but it was too little too late as the Mountaineers secured the 8-4 win.

Christian Scafidi (Clementon, N.J. / University of Pennsylvania) received the win for Vermont, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out three in five innings of play. Riley Sorenson took the loss, giving up five hits and four runs to the Mountaineers, including the key three-run homer early on.

The Mountaineers now improve to 12-7 overall, and will conclude their three-game homestand with a rematch against the Keene Swamp Bats tomorrow, Jul. 2, at 6:30 p.m. Vermont will look to avenge a 5-0 shutout loss to Keene earlier this season.
