Mountaineers Tripped Up by Muskrats, 8-1

Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Winnipesaukee Muskrats deflated Vermont's hopes of renewing another winning streak, claiming an 8-1 victory over the Mountaineers on Monday evening at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.

The Muskrats continued their five-game streak of scoring runs in the first inning, tallying one after a Michael Martinez single to right field, immediately followed by an error, gave way for Sam Cochrane to make his way home from second. The bats remained frozen until Winnipesaukee tacked on two more runs, first on a bizarre sequence when Austin Davis made the move to steal third. An errant whip by Ciaran Devenney (Manalapan, N.J. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell), meant to catch Davis, soared past Straton Podaras's (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) reach and gave Davis time to run home. Cochrane promptly picked up his first RBI, drilling one to right field that narrowly missed a diving Kevin Brenning (Florence, Al. / University of North Alabama) and allowed Jake Coro to score.

After getting a double play to start off the bottom of the fifth, the Muskrats could not wrap-up the frame before the Mountaineers broke through the scoreless drought. Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) drilled one through the left field gap that just skimmed past two lunging Muskrats and brought Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Fordham University) home to cut into the Winnipesaukee lead.

Winnipesaukee crushed Vermont's momentum in the seventh, pulling across two runners after loading the bases. Cochrane started off with another RBI, getting a sacrifice fly to bring Davis in for his second run. Coro immediately followed up after a wild pitch bounced into the air and gave him enough time to extend the Muskrat lead to 5-1. The visitors resumed their offense in the ensuing inning, pouring on three insurance runs to secure the 8-1 victory.

Christian Scafidi (Clementon, N.J. / University of Pennsylvania) took the loss, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out seven Muskrats. Alex Schwartz earned the win for Winnipesaukee, pitching for eight innings and issuing just five hits and one run.

The loss drops Vermont to 13-12, and the team will conclude their homestand tomorrow, Jul. 8, with a 6:30 p.m. showdown against the Keene Swamp Bats. Keene, winners of five straight until a loss tonight to Mystic, were responsible for snapping Vermont's franchise-tying nine-game winning streak just last week.
