MONTPELIER, Vt. - A three-run homer in the second inning was enough for the Keene Swamp Bats to claim victory over the Mountaineers at historic Montpelier Recreation Field on Sunday evening in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Swamp Bats defense held firm for the rest of the game, not allowing Vermont a single run en route to the shut-out 5-0 win.
The Swamp Bats wasted no time making their presence known, with David Matthews driving one past the right field fence with Logan Mathieu and Kyle Ball both on base in the second. Vermont almost responded in the bottom frame, but left Cameron Chick (Rocheport, Mo. / University of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) stranded on third and second respectively to leave the Keene lead at 3-0.
Both defenses proved immovable until the seventh inning, when the Swamp Bats subbed in pinch hitter Justice Lucas with Matt Trehub on third. The move paid off, as Lucas nailed one to center field that allowed Trehub to come home to up the visitor's lead.
The Mountaineers could not capitalize on nine allowed hits by Keene, stranding runners on several occasions as the Swamp Bats defense came through clutch in key moments to avoid any potential comeback. Matthews tallied another home run in the ninth to deflate Vermont's hopes, drilling one past right field to secure the 5-0 win.
Christian Scafidi (Clementon, N.J. / University of Pennsylvania) took the loss for Vermont, allowing five hits and the key three-run homer that gave Keene their permanent lead. Zach Messinger got the win for the Swamp Bats, striking out five despite giving up seven hits in a little over five innings of play.
The loss drops Vermont to 2-5, and the squad will now wrap up their two-game homestand with a Jun. 18 tilt against NECBL newcomers Martha's Vineyard. Opening pitch against the Sharks is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
