Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, VT - The Mountaineers rebounded from an ugly loss to end their season on a positive note, taking the last game against the North Adams SteepleCats, 5-0.
Andrew Kneussle (Plattsburgh, NY/ Canisius) was lights out in his final outing of the year, throwing six and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and two walk while striking out six.
Vermont would take an early lead in the bottom of the third. After Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) would single and move to second on an error, Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone) singled him in. Medina would come around and score on a Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd) single, giving Vermont the 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia) would double to right center, scoring Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State).
Kelley set two Mountaineers records Wednesday. He broke the single season hits record that was 50, as he ended the season with 54. He also broke the single season record for most games played, which was 41. Wednesday's game was Kelley's 42 of the year, missing only two games due to illness.
Grys would also set a record of his own in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Paul Witt (Harper's Ferry, WV/ VCU) would hit a two run homerun, Grys would double to left center. It was his 16th double of the season, breaking Arizona Diamondback and former Mountaineer A.J. Pollock's record of 15 doubles in 2007.
The Mountaineers end the season with a 21-23 record, just two games below .500. They also ended the month of July with a 15-10 record, a great bounce back after going 6-13 in June. They finished four games back of both Sanford (23-18) and Keene (21-19), who are tied for second in the Northern Division. They will return for the 2019 NECBL season in early June.
