Mountaineers Sweep Doubleheader with Nighthawks

The Vermont Mountaineers scored early and often on Friday afternoon, as they topped the Upper Valley NightHawks 8-1 in the continuation of a rain-shortened game from Thursday, and 6-0 in a game that was called off due to rain in the eighth inning.

The second game was official by the time the rain began to come down in the Central Vermont area, so it will not be continued, and the result stands.

In the first game, which was picked up in the fifth inning, Vermont scored three runs in the second, two in the fifth, and three in the seventh to pick up the win.

Slade Heggen (Missoula, Mo./Oregon) got them started in the second with an RBI single, scoring Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield) from second. That was followed up by a double of the bat of Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri), which drove in Jeremy McCuin (Gilbert, Ariz./Arizona St.).

Vermont got a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood) drove in Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville) with a single, and then later came around to score.

That portion of the game was played Thursday at The Maxfield Sports Complex in the Upper Valley. The Mountaineers led 5-1 when play resumed on Friday in Montpelier.

Scocca, Osinski, and Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall) all singled in the seventh inning and came around to score to sure up the victory.

Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J./Manhattan) got the win for Vermont, improving him to 2-1 on the season. Cordes Baker (Lexington, S.C./South Carolina Lancaster) suffered the loss for Upper Valley.

It didn't take long for the Mountaineers to get their offense going again in game two, when they scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Osinski got them going with an RBI single, driving in Trevor Ezell from third. Osinski later came around to score on a base hit by Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock).

Vermont added another run in the second when Ezell punched an RBI base hit, driving in Ryan Fineman (Westlake Village Calif./Indiana).

The 'Neers kept it going in the third when Mogues, Osinski, and Socca reached base consecutively to lead off the inning, and all three later came around to score.

TJ Santiago (Linden, N.J./Adelphi) pitched exquisitely for the Mountaineers, delivering five and one third innings, allowing no runs on two hits. The righty picked up the win, improving him to 2-2 on the year.

Ryan Takacs (Jackson, N.J./Manhattan) suffered the loss for the NightHawks after pitching two innings, and allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits.

Vermont took a 6-0 lead to the middle of the eighth inning when it began to poor, and the umpires called off the rest of the contest.

The Mountaineers improve to 13-15 on the season. The team has the weekend off due to the NECBL All-Star Game, which is being held on Sunday in Newport, R.I. Vermont has four players- Mikael Mogues, Mike Osinski, Troy Scocca, and Joe Tietjen- who will be participating in the festivities. The 'Neers will be in action again next Monday, when they'll host the Winnipesaukee Muskrats. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast network.
