Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Holyoke, Mass. - The Holyoke Blue Sox scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie en route to a X-X victory over the Vermont Mountaineers in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Thursday night. It was the season opener for both teams, who will meet again on Saturday in the Mountaineers home opener.
Vermont got the scoring started in the top of the second inning when freshman designated hitter Ryan Karl (Towaco, N.J./Louisville) smashed a solo homerun off starting pitcher Adam Norton to put the Mountaineers up 1-0. The Blue Sox would respond in the home half of the frame when Jhonneris Mendez hit a soft ground ball to short with runners on second and third and one out. The grounder would allow one run to score while the wild throw from shortstop Ricky Boas allowed another to trot to the plate giving Holyoke a 2-1 lead after two innings.
Brad Schnelle (Moon Township, Pa./Seton Hill) would then settle in nicely and keep Holyoke (1-0)off the board for the next four innings as his offense managed to scratch across a run in the fourth to tie things up. Sean Trent (Maitland, Fla./Florida) drove home Aaron Barbosa on a two-out singleto knot the score at 2-2 after Barbosa (Dracut, Mass./Northeastern) led off the inning with a single and stole second. Trent however would be thrown out at second trying to the stretch the base knock into a double.
Schnelle ran into some trouble in the sixth when Holyoke put runners at second and third with one out. Alex Haines (Greensburg, Pa./Seton Hill) would come on and get consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh when Matt Dearden (Newburry, Fla./Indiana) allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before a walk loaded the bases with nobody out. A wild pitch allowed Mendez to score and break the tie. Holyoke would score four more runs in the inning on another wild pitch, two passed balls, and a two-out RBI single to lead 7-2 before Dearden was replaced by Cory MacDonald with two outs and the bases loaded. MacDonald (Davis, Calif./Hawaii) gave up a single to allow the fifth run of the inning to score but then got Mendez, who led off the frame, to line out to short to end the inning.
Vermont (0-1) would get one more run in the top of the eighth when Johnny Mishu (Nashville, Tenn./Princeton) drove in Barbosa on a two out single, but that would be all the Mountaineers could muster late. Dearden (0-1) takes the loss giving up five runs on two hits while walking three and striking out a pair. Adam Norton (1-0) got the win for the Blue Sox going seven strong giving up two runs on five hits while striking out four batters.
