Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Mountaineers claimed a decisive 6-2 victory over the visiting Martha's Vineyard Sharks on Tuesday evening at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball action.

A three-run third inning was enough for Vermont to snap their four-game skid and right the ship, taking the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and NECBL newcomers Martha's Vineyard.

The Sharks struck first after Collin Shapiro found himself advancing around the bases on a walk, error by the pitcher and a wild pitch, before being driven in by a Nicholas Raposo single to right field. The visitors nearly scored again in the same frame, but the Mountaineers dashed their hopes as Vineyard left runners stranded on all bases.

Vermont swiftly answered, loading up the bases with Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University), Aaron Simpson (Orange, Ca. / Ball State University) and Cameron Chick (Rocheport, Mo. / University of Nebraska-Lincoln). Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) promptly drove one past the pitcher's head and in between second base and the shortstop, allowing Simpson and Gauthier to score. Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) finished the job, getting a sacrifice fly that gave Chick enough time to get the third run of the inning.

J.R. DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass. / University of Massachusetts Dartmouth) added an insurance run in the fourth after Simpson got a sacrifice fly out to left field that let DiSarcina make a clean streak to home, upping the Mountaineer lead to 4-1. DiLoreto continued his stellar night in the seventh, nailing a two-run homer past the right field fence with Chick on base. The Sharks attempted to mount a comeback but could only amass one run after Raposo scored on a Brady Slavens single in the eighth as the Mountaineers ran away with the 6-2 victory.

Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Le Moyne College) picked up the win for the Mountaineers, allowing four hits and the lone Shark run in seven innings of play. Daniel Hegarty got the loss for Martha's Vineyard, allowing six hits and four runs in six frames.

Vermont will now embark on a two-game road trip, first with a Wednesday, Jun. 19 match-up in North Adams, Mass. against the North Adams SteepleCats. Opening pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
