Vermont Mountaineers News Release
SANFORD, Me. - An exceptional pitching night from the Vermont Mountaineers helped secure an 8-1 victory over the Sanford Mainers on Wednesday evening at Goodall Park in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Mountaineers, who sat a game back of the Upper Valley Nighthawks for the final playoff spot in the NECBL Northern Division entering tonight, picked up a crucial NECBL victory and their second-straight win.
The Mountaineers ripped off three runs in the opening three frames, kicked off by an Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) run courtesy of an Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook University) single. Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) supplied the next score, driving one to center field to bring Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Fordham University) home from second. Goulard himself picked up an RBI in the third after a hit to right field got Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) in for the third run.
Stellar defensive play by Vermont, along with solid pitching from Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Le Moyne College), prevented Sanford from scoring in the first half of the tilt. The Mountaineers capitalized, pouring on three runs in the fifth frame. Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) got the ball rolling with Robison and Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) on base, driving one to bring DiLoreto home. On the next at-bat, Goulard drilled a double to give both Robison and Charping the opportunity to score.
The Mainers finally broke through the scoreless drought in the sixth, thanks to an Elliott Curtis sacrifice fly that gave Drew DeMartino the chance to sprint home. The home team could not find much luck the rest of the night, however, as the stifling Mountaineer defense clamped down and thwarted any further threats. Vermont, meanwhile, added two insurance runs in the final inning, first on a Robison sacrifice fly that brought Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) home. Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) provided the final run of the night on a single that allowed Charping to score and secure the 8-1 victory.
Murphy earned the win, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out eight Mainers in six frames. Rhett Gay took the loss for Sanford, giving up two hits and two runs while not striking out a single Mountaineer in the opening two innings of play.
The win ups Vermont's record to 15-12, and the team will now head south to Holyoke, Mass., to take on the Valley Blue Sox tomorrow, Jul. 11. Opening pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
