Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt.- The 2016 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) season came to a close for the Vermont Mountaineers on Wednesday, as they lost to the Keene Swamp Bats, 3-1 in a tiebreak game.

It was a rollercoaster season for the Mountaineers, who got off to a rough start, but bounced back in the month of July to get into playoff contention down the stretch.

Wednesday's game was to decide who gets the fourth and final playoff spot in the NECBL Northern Division. Four teams were tied for the spot going into Wednesday. Keene moves on to play the Upper Valley Nighthawks tonight in White River Junction. The winner of that game will clinch fourth place, and face Sanford in the first round of the postseason.

The Mountaineers fought until the end, but came up two runs short. Vermont put a run across in the bottom half of the final frame of the seven-inning contest. Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) led off the seventh with a single, and then was driven in by a one-out double off the bat of Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri).

The Mountaineers had a big opportunity in the fifth when they put two runners on, but reliever Carmen Giampetruzzi (Manchester, N.H./Boston Col) came on for the Swamp Bats and got two quick outs to work out of the jam.

Keene scored a pair of runs in the third inning and then another in the sixth to sneak past Vermont. Aubrey McCarty (Doerun, Ga./Florida A&M) knocked an RBI single in the third, scoring Dom Iero (North Canton, Ohio/Kent St.), to put the 'Bats on the board. The next batter, Patrick Sullivan (Sandy Springs, Ga./Georgia), hit a sacrifice fly, driving in Joshua Shaw (Wayne, N.J./St. Johns) from third.

Ryan Costello (Wethersfield, Conn./Central Connecticut St.) got an insurance run across in the sixth inning when he belted a solo home run over the right field fence.

Kevin Kernan (Mahopac, N.Y./Stony Brook) pitched well for the Mountaineers, but suffered the loss. He went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Kernan walked one batter and struck out one as well. Ryan Avidano (Fayetteville, Ga./Georgia) got the win for Keene after going four and one third innings, allowing no runs on four hits. Michael Pastore (Wynantskill, N.Y./Central Connecticut) got the save after he came in to get the final two outs of the game, and didn't give up a hit.

The Mountaineers would like to thank all of their fans, players, coaches, volunteers and host families for all that they did for the organization in 2016. For offseason updates, stay tuned to the Mountaineers' website, www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
