Mountaineers Receive Their Third Loss to In-State Rivals

HARTFORD, VT. - The Vermont Mountaineers fell short 9-10 at Maxfield Sports Complex to in-state rivals, the Upper Valley Nighthawks in game three of the Governor's Cup on Sunday night.

Vermont, now 21-3 still sits at first place in the New England Collegiate Baseball League with a four-game lead, and the Bristol Blues at their heels in overall second place. The Upper Valley Nighthawks sit eight games behind the Mountaineers with a record of 12-10 and remain in second place for the Northern Division.

Upper Valley came out of their dugout swinging hard and earned the first run of the game with a double from Tyler Sorrentino which set the tone for the night.

Vermont's number four batter Tyler Cox singled to center field and Adam Retzbach's ground out to third advanced Cox around the bases to where first baseman Mike Trotta could gain an RBI and bring Cox and Tom Ruscitti home.

Starting pitcher for the Mountaineers, Christopher Kahler had a quick four-man inning in the second, but the Nighthawks entered the batter's box ready to hit in the bottom of the third. Upper valley scored two runs off two hits by both Max Grant and Ryan Ignoffo.

The Nighthawks had a massive fifth inning with six earned runs off of two Vermont pitching changes and the Mountaineers answered in the top of the six with six runs of their own.

Upper Valley secured their win in the bottom of the eighth when Ty Kaufman singled to right field and scored off of a ground out to short by teammate Jonathan Hogart making the score 10-9. Vermont had high hopes to sweep the Nighthawks for the third time but fell short by one.

The Mountaineers come back to Recreation Field in Montpelier, Vermont for a Tuesday night contest against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats. Vermont has beat the Muskrats all three times the teams have faced off so far in the 2022 season. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m and you can follow along online on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
