Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - Vermont Mountaineers starter Thomas Muratore (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Lesley) pitched five scoreless innings on Saturday night, leading Vermont to a 5-1 win over the Newport Gulls in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
The Mountaineers offense combined for 11 hits, scoring runs in the second, fourth, and seventh innings, giving Vermont its third win of the season.
Jesse Forestell (Homewood, Ill./Western Michigan), who led Vermont with two RBIs, put the Mountaineers on the board in the second inning with an RBI single. Forestell drove in first baseman Davis Mikell (Williston, Vt./Castleton), who hit a triple to center field earlier in the inning. Mikell was two-for-four with two runs scored.
The Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by Forestell and a sacrifice fly by left fielder Chase Grant (Carlsbad, Calif./U of Nevada Reno).
In the seventh inning, Vermont put runners on second and third with nobody out before Gulls reliever Zach Lutner (Sicklerville, N.J./Villanova) balked, scoring David Sarmiento from third, and advancing Michael Hartnagel (Brownsburg, Ind./Butler). Vermont right fielder Jeff Scott (Forest, Ind./Bowling Green State) later drove in Hartnagel with a sac fly to center field.
The Mountaineers got strong relief pitching from Andrew Magno (Dublin, Ohio/Ohio State) and Gavin Lyon (Westerville, Ohio/Ohio State), who combined to allow just one run on two hits over four innings.
Newport's lone run came with one out in the ninth when shortstop Kevin Heiss (Silver Spring, Md./Rhode Island) hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Tyler Green (Williamsville, N.Y./Vanderbilt) from third.
Muratore, who allowed three hits over five innings of work, picked up his first win of the season for Vermont.
Starter Cole O'Connor (Bedford, Mass./Dartmouth) suffered the loss for Newport, moving him to 0-1 on the year. O'Connor gave up three runs on seven hits over four innings.
Vermont improves to 3-0 on the season. The Mountaineers will travel to North Adams, Mass. on Sunday to face the SteepleCats for the first time this year. The game, which starts at 4:30 p.m., can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240-AM or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
