Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest to the North Adams SteepleCats, 5-1, at Recreation Field on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 2-2 on the summer.
The game had the makings of a low scoring affair with neither team pushing across a run in the first four and a half innings of play. Vermont struck for its first and only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) reached on an infield single with one out and stole second. Two batters later, Adam Picard (UMass) walked. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) ripped an RBI double to right center scoring Caruso from second. Picard attempted to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Sam Spencer (Castleton) replaced starting pitcher Evan Bell (Indiana). Spencer walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases with no outs. The next two North Adams batters, Luke Maglich (South Florida) and Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame) hit sacrifice flies to give the SteepleCats a 2-1 lead, one they would not relinquish.
North Adams scored one more run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a 5-1 lead. In the eighth inning, Maglich walked with one out. Richardson followed with a single to set first and second with one away. Two batters later, with two outs, Mike Hernandez (Nova Southeastern) walked to load the bases. During the next hitter, Vladimir Gomez's at bat, Vermont pitcher Nick Kevlin (MidAmerica Nazarene) threw a wild pitch to score where Maglich scored from third and Richardson from second. Kevlin and catcher Evan Harasta (Albany) had a miscommunication and the throw to cut off the second runner at the plate went out toward the shortstop position.
Bell went five strong for Vermont and allowed no runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out six and received a no decision. Sam Spencer took the loss to move to 0-2 on the summer. Spencer allowed two runs on no hits and three walks in an inning of relief.
North Adams starter T.J. Hunt (Monmouth) got the win and is now 1-0 on the season. He pitched five innings and gave up one run on six hits and one walk. He struck out one.
The Mountaineers are back in action Wednesday night when they take on the Valley Blue Sox at Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
