Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Mountaineers fell to the two-time defending league champion Valley Blue Sox on the road on Friday evening, 5-2, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action at McKenzie Stadium.

Vermont could not overcome a hot start by the Blue Sox, finding their offensive momentum too little too late as a stellar pitching night from Valley's Trey Shaffer in the first five innings left little opportunity for the Mountaineers to score.

The Blue Sox quickly got things underway in the first, with JP Walsh advancing around the bases on a walk, a Collin Matthews single, and a stolen base, before scoring the first run of the game on a Richard Constantine at-bat. Vermont nearly responded in the following inning, but to no avail, leaving Brian Goulard (City, N.Y. / Hofstra University) stranded on third. Valley swiftly capitalized, continuing their output with a Matthew Richardson sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Michael Wroth the opportunity to score and up the home team's lead to 2-0 in the second.

The defending league champions resumed their offensive barrage in the fifth after a Constantine double with two Blue Sox players on base let Walsh and Travis Holt score. The Mountaineers were able to cut into the deficit in the seventh after an Aaron Simpson (Orange, Ca. / Ball State University) single with loaded bases gave way for Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) and Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) to come home.

A two-base error in the following error ended Vermont's momentum, after a throw by Kevin Brenning (Florence, Al. / University of North Alabama), meant for Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook) at third base to halt Richardson's progression from second to third, sailed over Giordano's head and over the left fence, allowing Richardson to score to make it 5-2.

Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Allegheny College) took the loss for the Mountaineers, giving up two hits and four runs in a little less than five innings of play. Shaffer got the win for Valley, allowing two hits while not granting a run and striking out eleven.

The loss drops the Mountaineers to 2-3 overall as the team continues their road trip with a 6:30 p.m. game Saturday evening in North Adams, Mass., against the North Adams SteepleCats.
