Vermont Mountaineers News Release

In back to back nights, the Mountaineers have been held to under 5 hits, as they dropped their contest Wednesday night to the Sanford Mainers, 2-1. Vermont was only able to muster 3 hits throughout the game, which led to their lone run.

Quality pitching dominated the first three innings of the game, as Vermont starter Ross Mintzer (Glenside, PA/ Lock Haven) and Sanford starter Edward Baram (Saddle Brook, NJ/ Adelphi) went back and forth with outs, allowing only a handful of hits and no runs.

The fourth is where the Mainers really broke it open, courtesy of their big first baseman Tyler Solomon (Haymarket, VA/ Vanderbilt). Shane Marshall (Webster, NY/ Binghamton U.) reached first on a fielder's choice, and came around to score when Marshall took the first pitch he saw deep to right center for his first homerun of the year, giving the Mainers a 2-0 lead.

That would be all Sanford needed, as they pieced together their bullpen for the next five innings, limiting Vermont to one run. The Mountaineers were able to break through in the 6th. Jarficur Parker (Dallas, TX/ Arkansas Pine Bluff) led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) followed that with a single down the right field line, moving Parker to third. Nolan Tressler (Statesboro Georgia/ Georgia Southern) was able to bring Parker in on a fielder's choice. That would be the entirety of the Mountaineers offense, as they would not plate a runner the rest of the game.

For the Mainers bullpen, William Kazura (Linwood, NJ/ Felician College) threw two solid innings, striking out three while only giving up one hit. Jack Weisenburger (Rockford, MI/ Michigan) struck out the side in the 9th, recording his first save of the year.

Mintzer took the loss for the Mountaineers, going five innings, giving up two hits, two runs, and two walks while striking out five. The winning pitcher was R.J. Hall (Cohasset, MA/ Tufts), who win an inning and a third, giving up one run on one hit.

The Mountaineers (0-2) will have their first off day of the year Thursday, and will host the New Bedford BaySox Friday at Recreation Field in Montpelier, first pitch scheduled for 6:30. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
