Mountaineers Explode for 12 Runs in Victory over Sanford

Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Mountaineers erupted for double-digit runs for the third-straight game, collecting a 12-1 road win over the Sanford Mainers on Monday evening at Goodall Park in New England Collegiate Baseball League play.

Vermont recorded double-digit hits for the third-straight game as well, this time tallying 14 drives en route to extending their winning streak to three games. The Mountaineers have now exploded for 46 total hits in the last three contests.

The Mountaineers wasted no time getting on the board as the Mainers gave up two hits to Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) and Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) before a Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) at-bat with one out allowed Gauthier to pick up the first run of the game. The visitors repeated in the third inning to add another run, this time a Gauthier at-bat gave Kevin Brenning (Florence, Al. / University of North Alabama) enough time to sprint home.

The offense exploded for Vermont in the following frame as DiLoreto, Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Fordham University), J.R. DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth), Sean Flaherty (Orangeburg, N.Y. / Hofstra University) and Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook) all picked up runs. All nine Mountaineers in the batting order found themselves up to bat in the inning, with the first five advancing onto base. DiLoreto added another run in the fifth after Flaherty drove him in with a single.

Sanford could not make up any ground as an exceptional pitching night from Christian Scafidi (Clementon, N.J. / University of Pennsylvania) left little opportunity for the Mainers to muster any offense. Vermont, meanwhile, resumed their onslaught with a four-run sixth inning, kicked off by a Dondrae Bremner (Toronto, Ontario / University of Cincinnati) score when Flaherty walked on loaded bases. A wild pitch allowed DiLoreto to come home before Brenning drilled one that clanged off the right-field fence and gave both DiSarcina and Flaherty supple time to score.

The Mainers collected their lone run in the final inning after Brandon Lankford scored on a wild pitch, but the Mountaineer lead was insurmountable as the visitors cruised to the 12-1 victory.

Scafidi got his second win of the season after allowing just four hits in five innings of play, striking out eight of the 20 batters faced. Trevor LaBonte took the loss for the Mainers, giving up seven runs on seven hits in a little over three frames.

With the victory, Vermont improves to 6-7, and will now return home for a 6:30 p.m. showdown against the two-time defending NECBL champs Valley Blue Sox tomorrow, Jun. 25. The Mountaineers will also celebrate the league's 25th anniversary at tomorrow's game.
