Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers earned a 4-3 win over the Valley Blue Sox in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Tuesday night at Recreation Field. With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 25-13 on the summer and move a full three games up on the second place Sanford Mainers in the Northern Division standings. Sanford did not play Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, when they scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Nick Solak (Louisville) led off the inning with a walk. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) followed the same path of his college teammate by walking to set up first and second with no outs. After Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) smacked the hit of the game, a two RBI single to right, plating Solak and Tiberi to give Vermont a 4-3 edge.

Adam Picard (UMass) struck out two, pitching a scoreless ninth inning en route to earning his third save of the summer.

Neither starter received a decision. Jared Gesell (UNCW) was phenomenal in relief once again and earned the win to move to 2-2 on the season. Gesell dealt an inning and two-thirds of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk. He notched five strikeouts in the outing.

David Schmidt (Stanford) took the loss in relief for Valley. Schmidt allowed two runs on no hits and two walks in one inning of work. He moves to 0-2 on the summer.

Cameron Sorgie (UAlbany) started for the Mountaineers and gave the team a quality start. Sorgie went six and one-third innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out three.

Joe DiBenedetto (Seton Hall) started and hurled six innings for the Blue Sox. He allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out four.

Vermont scored one run in the fourth and one in the fifth. Amburgey hit a two out single to kick-start the offense in the fourth. He stole second and scored on an RBI single by Colin Lyman (Louisvile). In the fifth, Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Ben Hall (Alabama-Huntsville) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) walked. Solak hit a sacrifice fly to score the run and tie the game at two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday night, when they host the Keene Swamp Bats for the final time this summer. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. The National Life Group and The Times Argus sponsor volunteer appreciation night at the ballpark. Free team yearbooks and fun team prizes will be featured along with a souvenir blowout sale.
