
Mountaineers defeat Laconia Muskrats

Laconia, NH - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Laconia Muskrats 5-0 at Robbie Mills Field on Opening Night of the 2014 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) season.
Vermont pushed across two runs in the second inning on no hits. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg College) led off the inning by reaching on an error by Laconia third basemen Braxton Martinez (St. Louis). Designated hitter Alex Caruso (St. John's) followed with a walk before Eliot Ashbeck (Bradley) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Amburgey would go on to score two batters later on a wild pitch during second basemen Brett Charbonneau's (Le Moyne) at bat to give Vermont a 1-0 lead. Caruso moved to third on the play and would score when Charbonneau reached on an error by shortstop Cornelius Copeland (St. Petersburg College).
Vermont padded its lead with three more runs in the ninth inning on just two hits.
The Mountaineers pitching was the story of the game, as starter Ryan Davis (Le Moyne) and reliever Jared Gesell (Wilmington U.) combined to throw a five-hit shutout. Davis threw six innings, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out eight and got the win (1-0). Gesell earned a three-inning save (1). He gave up no runs on two hits. He also recorded four strikeouts.
Jordan Sheffield (Vanderbilt) took the loss for the Muskrats despite not allowing an earned run. Sheffield (0-1) pitched six innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) led Vermont with three hits in the contest.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday night when they play their home opener. Vermont will host the Valley Blue Sox at 6:30 at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
