Keene Swamp Bats News Release

MONTPELIER, VT - Right-handed pitcher Ryan Fasano (Stony Point, NY/Rutgers) earned his first victory of the season giving up two runs in six innings pitched to guide the Vermont Mountaineers past the Keene Swamp Bats, 5-3, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Tuesday night at Montpelier Recreational Field.

The Mountaineers improve to 9-8 overall. The Swamp Bats fall to 11-7.

Fasano (1-1) surrendered six hits on the night, one walk and three strikeouts in his third start of the season (fifth appearance). Keene starter Tyler Skulina (Strongsville, OH/Kent St.) was handed the loss on five innings pitched, five runs (four earned), 10 hits, no walks and three punchouts. Kyle Grana (Louisville, KY/Bellarmine Univ.) closed the door in the ninth for his fourth save on one home run and one walk.

Scoreless through three-and-half-innings of play, Vermont broke open the scoring with a three-run frame and never looked back.

After shortstop Dan Kemp (Sturbridge, MA/Franklin Pierce) grounded out to his counterpart Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, IN/Louisville), Tyler Young (Coatesville, PA/Louisville) and Rob Griffith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sacred Heart) notched back-to-back singles to set up the inning.

Rob Kelly (Aurora, CO/St. Anselm) followed with a grounder to second base but Derek Toadvine's (Springfield, OH/Kent St.) throw rolled into left field on an attempted double play allowing Young to score from second base.

Greg Bachman (Germantown, TN/Austin Peay) made it 2-0 in the next at-bat with a very rare RBI single. Bachman lined a tailor-made double play ball to Chittenden at short but on its last hop the ball struck Chittenden in the chest entering the fielder's jersey. The Mountaineers were awarded the run but no other base runners were allowed to advance. Rolando Gautier (Pennsauken, NJ/Austin Peay) followed with an RBI double to left field plating Kelly to push Vermont's lead to 3-0. Kemp gave the Mountaineers a 4-0 advantage in the fifth smacking an RBI double to left field scoring Derek Jones (Snohmish, WA/Washington St.) from first base.

Left fielder Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant Univ.) cut the Swamp Bats deficit in half at 4-2 launching his third home run of the season to right field off of Fasano scoring Esteban Gomez (Houston, TX/San Jacinto Coll.) in the top of the sixth.

Vermont responded in the bottom half of the inning as Brian O'Grady (Warminster, PA/Rutgers) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded for his third RBI of the season and a 5-2 lead.

Colby May (Guyton, GA/Georgia) smashed his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs off of Grana to cut the gap at 5-3. Grana ended the game and Keene's potential rally inducing a one-pitch pop up to Michael Burruss (Marietta, GA/Georgia Southern) to end the game.

Keene returns to action tomorrow, on the road, against the Mystic Schooners at 6:30 pm.
