Vermont Mountaineers News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 8-1, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Joe Wolfe Field on Sunday evening.
With the win, Vermont snaps a three-game losing skid and improves to 6-6 overall. North Adams falls to 7-6 on the summer.
Vermont left-handed starter Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y. / Manhattan College) went six strong innings en route to earning his first win of the season. Cosgrove allowed just one earned run on three hits. He struck out six and walked none while moving to 1-1.
The Mountaineers did most of their damage in the middle innings, scoring three runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the eighth to cap off their scoring.
After SteepleCats' starter Matthew Kostalos (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Thomas Acquinas) retired the first twelve batters of the game, the Mountaineers' offense erupted. Third baseman Matt Kozuch (Glenn Rock, N.J. / Fordham) led off the inning with a single to right. Catcher Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) followed with a sacrifice bunt, but reached on a throwing error by the pitcher Kostalos. Kozuch moved to third and Smith to second on the error. First baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) then smacked a two-RBI double to give Vermont a 2-1 lead it would not give up. Two batters later, leftfielder Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) hit an RBI single to score Dudek and provide the Mountaineers with a 3-1 edge.
In the sixth, centerfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) singled to lead things off and advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior second baseman Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) sacrificed Parenty to third before catcher Danny Bermudez (Cummings, Ga. / Western Carolina) hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Parenty and make it 4-1 Mountaineers. Kozuch singled and Smith walked before Dudek cracked an RBI double and junior rightfielder Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) laced an RBI single to make it 6-1.
In the eighth, Kozuch led off with a double. Smith then singled. Two batters later, Madigan hit another RBI single and Jackson a sacrifice fly to make it 8-1.
The SteepleCats scored their lone run of the game in the third inning.
Kostalos took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the summer. He lasted five and two-thirds, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk. He struck out two.
Sophomore lefthander Teddy Rodliff (West Babylon, N.Y. / Stony Brook) earned a three-inning save, his first of the summer. Rodliff allowed no runs on no hits and one walk. He struck out one.
