Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - An exceptional night at the bats and on the defensive end propelled the Mountaineers to a 7-3 victory over the Keene Swamp Bats on Tuesday night in a marquee New England Collegiate Baseball League showdown at historic Montpelier Recreation Field.
Vermont picked up their first win over the Swamp Bats this season, avenging a 5-0 shutout loss last month and another defeat last week. Keene's 8-3 victory at the start of this month ended Vermont's franchise-tying nine-game winning streak.
Stellar defensive play by the Mountaineers prevented the Swamp Bats from gaining much offensive momentum in the opening stretch of the game, as Vermont amassed five runs in the second and third innings. The onslaught was kicked off by a slick Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) double to right field that brought Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) home. Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Fordham University) finished the job, getting his own drive down the middle to get Robison in.
The landslide resumed in the third as back-to-back mistakes doomed Keene's defensive stand. Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook University) capitalized on a balk, getting home before Climo advanced to third and then home on consecutive wild pitches. Robison added one more run before the Swamp Bats could collect the final out, drilling one over the right field fence to extend the Mountaineer lead to 5-0.
Robison maintained his offensive firepower in the fifth, hammering another one over the right field fence with Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) on base. The Swamp Bats rallied for a three-run sixth frame, first with a David Bedgood single to left field to get Andrew MacNeil home. Bedgood himself was able to immediately come home, as Will Wagner smashed his own home run to cut into the Vermont lead. The Mountaineer defense held sturdy the rest of the way, coasting to the 7-3 victory.
Enzo Stefanoni (Darien, Conn. / Harvard University) earned the win after a remarkable night on the mound, pitching just under six frames and allowing five hits and three Keene runs while facing 23 Swamp Bats. Zach Messinger took the loss, giving up ten hits and seven runs, all earned, in over four innings of play. Nicholas DeGennaro (Toms River, N.J. / Stony Brook University) got the save, coming in for the final three frames and allowing just two hits while striking out five of the 13 batters faced.
Vermont improves to 14-12 and will now hit the road for the next two nights, first heading to Sanford, Me., tomorrow, Jul. 10, for a 6:30 p.m. match-up against the Sanford Mainers.
