Vermont Mountaineers News Release

LACONIA, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Laconia Muskrats, 10-3, in Game 2 of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Northern Division semifinals at Robbie Mills Field on Tuesday night.

With the win, Vermont completes the sweep of Laconia and advances to the Northern Division finals for the second time in as many seasons. The Muskrats conclude their summer with a combined regular season and playoff record of 21-23.

The Mountaineers will await the winner of the other Northern Division semifinal, with Sanford and North Adams splitting the first two games of the series. The two sides will square off in a decisive Game 3 tomorrow night. The first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Goodall Park.

With the score tied at two entering the fourth inning, the Mountaineers offense pushed across six runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Designated hitter Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) led off the frame with a walk. First baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) followed with a walk. The next batter, Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan), reached on a fielder's choice after grounding a ball towards Laconia starting pitcher Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H. / Southern New Hampshire). Viehoff hopped of the mound and attempted to nab Dudek at third on the play, but his throw was off the mark and went into left field. Dudek came in to score to make it 3-2 Vermont. After Rosenbaum stole third to set the scene at first and third with no one out, leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) lofted an RBI single to score Rosenbaum and put the Mountaineers up 4-2. Vermont tacked on four more runs in the inning while managing just one more hit, a bunt single by rightfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook).

The six runs Vermont scored in the inning came on just two hits and three errors. The Mountaineers batted around and sent ten men to the plate.

Laconia scored one run in the fifth to cut the deficit to five, at 8-3. Vermont added two more runs in the seventh to go up 10-3 and cap off the scoring.

The Mountaineers scored ten runs in the game on just four hits, but the team drew eight walks and showed great discipline at the plate.

Vermont starter Sean Leland (Orland Park, Ill. / Louisville) hurled five innings and earned the win to improve to 1-0 in postseason play. The righthander allowed three runs (all earned) on eight hits and two walks. He struck out five.

Viehoff took the loss, falling to 0-1 in the playoffs. The southpaw pitched just three and one-third innings and gave up eight runs (four earned) on three hits and five walks. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers' bullpen, consisting of Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt. / UMass-Dartmouth), Drew Lunde (Sammamish, Wash. / Washington State) and Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne), combined to toss a scoreless final four innings.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Thursday night when the squad hosts either Sanford or North Adams in Game 1 of the Northern Division finals. The contest can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
