The roster features three players with strong ties to Sacramento. Quarterback MCLEOD BETHEL-THOMPSON played at Sacramento State (2008-10) after transferring from UCLA. He was with the San Francisco 49ers throughout the preseason but was released on Sunday.
Receiver OTIS AMEY starred at Sacramento State (2001-04) and scored a touchdown the first time he ever touched the ball in the NFL. This came on a 75-yard punt return while playing with the San Francisco 49ers in 2005. He also played for the Mountain Lions in 2010.
Quarterback RYAN COLBURN grew up in Visalia but he was born in Sacramento and still has lots of family in the area. A rookie, Colburn put up solid numbers while starting at Fresno State in 2009 and 2010. Colburn will battle Bethel-Thompson and JORDAN PALMER for the starting quarterback position. Palmer, the younger brother of CARSON PALMER, was a back-up quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals for the last three seasons.
The Mountain Lions will open the 2011 season at home (at Hornet Stadium) against the Las Vegas Locos on Sept. 17. Las Vegas won the UFL championship in 2009 and 2010 under head coach JIM FASSEL. Sacramento went 4-4 in 2010 and averaged about 18,250 fans for the home games.
