Rhodes Returns a Destroyer

September 8, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Thursday, September 8, 2011 - Record-setting United Football League running back and eight-year National Football League veteran DOMINIC RHODES has signed with the Virginia Destroyers.

Rhodes set numerous UFL records with the Florida Tuskers during the 2010 UFL season, including single-season touchdowns (10), most consecutive games with a touchdown (seven), single-season rushing yards (551), single-season carries (127), single-season rushing touchdowns (nine) and most 100-yard rushing games in a season (three). He also caught 11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, and was second in the UFL in kickoff-return average (21.7).

When Rhodes signed with the Indianapolis Colts for a third different stint for the home stretch of the 2010 NFL season, he said, "The UFL was an awesome experience for me. It was what I needed. It was definitely a blessing. I needed to go there and get that on my back too so I can carry that when I come here (to Indianapolis). I guarantee you guys in the UFL are hungry and I've always been that way and it just gave me more hunger."

In eight NFL seasons with the Colts (2001, 2003-06, 2008, 2010) and one with the Oakland Raiders (2007), Rhodes ran for 3,286 yards and 26 touchdowns, and caught 147 passes for 1,025 yards and four touchdowns.

As a rookie with the Colts in 2001, Rhodes ran for a career-high 1,104 yards and nine touchdowns. In Super Bowl XLI with the Colts, Rhodes ran 21 times for 113 yards and a score in the 29-17 win over the Chicago Bears.

Rhodes, 32, adds to an already-veteran tailback corps in Virginia. Tuskers backfield-mate Maurice Hicks, 33, also is on the roster, as is ex-Chicago Bears back Adrian Peterson, 32.

Media attending training camp in Virginia may interview Rhodes and other Destroyers players following practice at 7.30pm on Sunday, September 11, at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex in Virginia Beach. Players and coaches are available after practice.

Rhodes and the Destroyers open the new season in Omaha against the Nighthawks at 7pm CDT at TD Ameritrade Park on Thursday, September 15.
