Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert SK- Prince Albert Raiders' defenceman Josh Morrissey was named the Canadian Hockey League Subway Scholastic Player of the Year and the CHL Awards today in Saskatoon.
The Raiders alternate captain beat out Darnell Nurse of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Charles-David Beaudoin of the Drummondville Voltigeurs, who were the nominees from the OHL and QMJHL, respectively.
Morrissey finished his sophomore season with the Green and Gold leading the team's blueliners with 15 goals and 47 points. Morrissey also recorded 5 power play goals and 19 assists on the man-advantage while posting a plus-14 rating, all tops among Raiders defencemen. In addition to playing a major role on the ice, Morrissey worked tirelessly at his studies, spending supplementary time with tutors and graduating from Carlton High School with honours.
The Raiders first round draft pick, 6th overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft has been named the Raiders Scholastic Player of the Year in each of the previous two seasons, and was named the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year earlier this month.
The Calgary, Albert product becomes just the second Raider to win the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award, after Jeff Nelson took the honour in both 1989 and 1990. The 6', 185-pound rearguard is the third Raider to earn a CHL distinction, along with Nelson and Dan Hodgson, who was the CHL Player of the Year in 1985.
Morrissey will head to Toronto, Ontario next week for the 2013 NHL Draft Combine taking place from May 27 until June 1. The combine is the final chance for prospects to impress NHL Scouts and executives for the upcoming 2013 NHL Draft in Newark New Jersey on June 30th.
