Morehead City too Strong for Steamers

July 21, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

Ben Whetstone's four-RBI eruption was not enough to take down the Morehead City Marlins on Saturday night at Hicks Field, falling 11-5.

Whetstone smashed a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his third round-tripper in four games. Over those four contests, he has drove home eight runs.

He added a two-RBI double in the eighth to bring his season RBI total to 15 in just 20 games this summer.

Morehead City brought the offensive cavalry, however. Five Marlins logged multi-hit games, while four of them had more than one run batted in.

Every hitter besides Hunter Shepherd tallied at least one hit. Shepherd, on the other hand, reached base twice on base on balls.

Craig Lewis and Alex Pimentel slapped three hits each. Pimentel went for two extra-base hits, including his first home run of the season. Lewis also went deep, a solo home run in the third frame.

Chaston Gordon crushed his first home run in a Morehead City uniform, a three-run smash in the second that put the game out of reach.

Joe Mason and Brendan Dougherty added two runs driven in apiece.

Jake Lewis earned the win in five innings as the Marlins starter. He fanned four Clams and allowed three runs.

Collin Storms fell to 1-2, surrendering seven runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings as the starter.

Troy Maslowski and Matt Gill came out of the bullpen for Edenton. Maslowski went 2.2 frames, handing one run to the Marlins.

Gill tossed the final four innings, striking out five hitters and giving out three runs.

The loss puts Edenton to 6-9, dropping to last place in the North division. Morehead City is now 7-6 in the closing half, but the Marlins have already clinched a playoff spot.

Edenton returns to action on Sunday night on the road against the Peninsula Pilots at 7 p.m.
