Elmira Pioneers News Release
The wait was worth it. The Pioneers bounced back from an hour and forty miute rain-delay to turn away the Capitales de Quebec 3-0 as the homestand hallmark, great pitching, continued for the home team. Quebec cruised to a 14-4 victory at Allentown for their 6th win in a row thus Elmira stays a 1/2 game back of the division leaders.
1,114 fans waited out the rain delay as Sean Brummet (4-1) extended the Pioneers win streak to 4 straight by firing 7 innings of brilliant 1 hit shutout ball. Brummet allowd a single to Benoit Emond to begin the game. But a couple pitches later Brummet picked him in a run-down and after that the Brookston, Ind. left-hander proceeded to retire the next 20 batters he would face until his departure following the 7th inning. The peroformance was all the more remarkable considering Brummet had warmed-up almost 2 hours prior to game-time before the lighting and rain came into the picture.
Matt Pike and Julio Perez each fired an inning of shutout relief to complete the masterpiece. For Perez, it was his league leading 5th save, tied with Quebec's Mark Cisar.
The Pioneers had no hits in the first inning off Regie Leplante (1-3) but tallied a run in the 4th when Norm Hutchins would lead-off with a single and eventually score on a Sac-fly by Brian Jones. Jones leads the team and is 3rd in the league with 23 rbi's.
Rod Smith and Ron Bush led off the 5th drawing a pair of Leplante's back-to-back walks. Smith scored on a Huchins ground-out and Rafael Alvarez drove in the finl run with a single to right.
Quebec entered the series with the league's highest batting average but thus far in 2 games have been limited to 10 hits and 2 runs by the stingy Pioneer pitching staff.
Sean Brummet started the pitching dominant homestad last Monday spinning 7-innings allowing 1 unearned run on 7 hits. Keagle's 2-hitter on Tusday was followed by Stine's 1-hitter on Wednesday. Thursday night Andra went 8ip allowing 4 hits and Friday it was Eric Estes going 7 strong ip giving up 6 hits and just 2 runs. Combined, the Pioneer starters have gone 46ip giving up 7 runs, 5 earned on 21 hits with 2 bb's and 24k on the entire homestand.
Elmira aims for their 5th straight win as they try to sweep the Quebec Capitales Sunday afternoon at 1:05. After that, the next Elmira home game is Tuesday, Juny 2 on Toshiba Fireworks Night.
Greg Keagle (3-3, 3.00) is countered by Keith Dunn (4-0, 2.27) in the homestand finale. League ERA leader Jeff Andra will start the Tusday road-trip opener at Adiondack.
