Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Brandon Montour dished out assists during three Waterloo Black Hawks weekend wins and was named the United States Hockey League CCM Defenseman of the Week for the fifth time this season on Monday.
The 19-year-old was involved each night, and the crucial victories gave Waterloo both the USHL Western Conference Championship and a lead for the Anderson Cup, awarded each year to the league's regular season champion. During a 7-2 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday, Montour recorded a goal and an assist to help the home team pull away to an insurmountable lead. Saturday, the University of Massachusetts recruit's effort resulted in an assist on Blake Winieicki's overtime goal as the Hawks topped the Sioux Falls Stampede, 4-3. Sunday in Green Bay, Montour set up two first period goals and turned in a team-best +3 plus/minus differential during a 4-3 decision against the Gamblers.
The Oshweken, Ontario native's five Player of the Week awards are the most individually for a Black Hawks club that has collectively earned 16 commendations this winter.
While appearing in all 58 Black Hawks games, Montour has fashioned a season which makes him a strong candidate for the NHL Draft in June. Sunday, he earned his 58th point, surpassing Blake Kessel for the most points by a Waterloo defenseman during the 12 seasons that the USHL has been a Tier 1 junior league. He leads all league defenseman in points and assists, while ranking second in goals (13). At +32, he sits third among blue-liners and sixth overall in the USHL.
Montour and the Hawks conclude the regular season this weekend, facing the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for a home-and-home series which begins on the road Friday. Tickets for Saturday's matchup at Young Arena are on sale from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680 or online at waterlooblackhawks.com. The game is sponsored by 97.7, KCRR and Next Generation Wireless; 500 lucky fans in attendance will take home a Black Hawks/Next Generation Wireless Playoff t-shirt.
