Elmira Pioneers News Release

Jeff Andra spun 8 innings of 4 hit ball allowing 1 unearned run as the Pioneers defeated the Allentown Ambassadors 6-3 in the finale of a 4-game series at Dunn Field. Elmira took 3 out of 4 games in the series.

Andra entered the game with the top ERA in the league at 1.35. He now has allowed only 5 earned runs in 41.1ip to improve to 4-2. The game ended Andra's personal 2-game losing streak as the tall lefty had taken a pair of hard-luck 1-run losses prior in his previous starts. The University of Oklahoma native formerly pitched in the San Francisco Giants organization. He retired the first 12 batters to face him as well as 15 of the first 16.

Andra follows Sean Brummet, Greg Keagle and Justin Stine with terrific performance in the series. Keagle took the only Pioneer loss of the set but fired a complete-game 2-hitter. Stine just missed a no-hitter in the Wednesday game.

Norm Hutchins also had a good game for the Pioneers. He made a spectacular leaping catch at the wall in left-center in the top of the 7th inning that would have allowed the Amnassadors to tie the score at 2-2.. A half-inning later, he blasted a long HR to deep RF that laned across the street and in the front-yard of one of Dunn Field's neighbors. Hutchins HR was his 4th of the year and propelled the Pioneers into a 6-2 lead.

Ron Bush walked twice in going 1-for-2 with a stolen base and 3 runs scored. Rod Smith was 1-for-3 with a SB and a run scored.

Caleb Balbuena (1-1) went 6.2ip for the Ambassadors allowing 7 hits and 6 earned runs in the losing cause. He had allowed only 2 runs through the first 6 innings in a close contest before the Pioneers put 4 on the board in the 7th.

Allentown rallied for 2 runs in the 9th off Matt Pike to close the scoring.

The Pioneers open a 3-game series with the Quebec Capitals Friday night at 7:05 on Big Fox and Big Foote's Funny Nose and Glasses Night. Entering play Thursday night, Quebec had the best record in the league at 17-8 and held a 5-game advantage over Adirondack in the North Division standings.
