Halifax Mooseheads News Release

Some former members of the Halifax Mooseheads played significant roles both on the ice and behind the bench while helping Canada capture the IIHF World Men's Hockey Championship Gold Medal on Sunday in Tampere, Finland.

Canada defeated Germany 5-2 to give our nation its fifth tournament victory in the last eight years and 28th overall. Defenceman MacKenzie Weegar (Mooseheads 2012-2014) led all blueliners in the event with 11 points and was named the Top Defenceman for the tournament and was also named to the Media All Star team. Justin Barron (Mooseheads 2017-2021) also logged key minutes on the blueline for Canada and finished with three points in the tournament while the squad was led by Head Coach Andre Tourigny (Mooseheads Head Coach 2016-2017) and Assistant Coach Alex Tanguay (Mooseheads forward 1996-1999).

Weegar was a force throughout the tournament at both ends of the ice and was a +10 to go along with his three goals and eight assists. The 29-year-old from Nepean, ON recently finished his first season as a member of the Calgary Flames after parts of six seasons with the Florida Panthers. Barron was a rookie with the Montreal Canadiens this past season where he had 15 points in 39 games.

Tourigny is the current Head Coach of the Arizona Coyotes while Tanguay has been an Assistant Coach with the Detroit Red Wings for the last two seasons.

The Halifax Mooseheads organization would like to congratulate Weegar, Barron, Tourigny and Tanguay for their incredible accomplishments with Hockey Canada.
